High Rise Rescue On East Huron Street
The Challenge
In June of 2019 Maverick was contacted by Gina Will from the residential tower located at 30 E Huron in Chicago Illinois in regards to their existing pool. We went out to complete a site visit to see what kind of condition their pool was in. It turned out to be a pool that was about 40 years old made of mild steel that was painted. The gutter and shell were rusting and deteriorated to the point that the pool was not usable. Maverick began the process of budgeting prices and costs for a complete over haul of the pool.
We began by hiring our preferred pool architect WT Engineering and had them out to begin our design build process. Following our direction, WT came up with a design for a brand new stainless steel pool with waterline tile, a coping stone that incorporates a finger grip required by IDPH and a liner with non-slip flooring to be within the IDPH code. WT also engaged a structural engineer to ensure that the weight of the new pool with water would be acceptable for the 40 year old structure. In an effort to save the project some money, we were able to re-use some of the filter equipment and once the design was finalized and we received a permit from IDPH we began the construction phase.
"Throughout all of the challenges, we were able to stay focused and complete the job on time and on budget."
The Solution
In order to construct the pool, we had to demo the existing pool walls and gutter. The existing floor was to remain and support the new pool. Once the walls were cut out, we stacked the old material onto pallets and banded the material for safe removal. Maverick purchase all new stainless material and fabricated it off site.
One of the biggest challenges was getting the new material on to the 10th floor deck. A crane company was needed since the elevators were too small to accommodate the pool wall and floor panels. Once we were ready, we hired a crane company, which backed into a very tight alley and we crane picked all of the new material and removed the old material. Maverick hauled it off site and disposed of it at a recycling plant. This project began in the winter of 2020, so the winter conditions wouldn’t allow us to keep working. To combat this, we erected a massive tent to cover the pool. Inside the tent, we were able to assemble to pool piece by piece. Once it was all welded together, we installed the coping stones, the waterline tile and the liner. When spring came around the pool was ready to be tested.
The Result
Maverick filled the pool, and tested all of the equipment. In the spring of 2021 30 E Huron was our first inspection of the year and we passed the IDPH inspection without any issues. This project was a massive challenge, but we were able to stay focused and complete the job on time and on budget.
